Advantages 1) Durability: Aluminum will obviously outlast plastic letters. 2) Aluminum can be Anodized or Powder-Coated; plastics cannot. 3) Price: It's true that aluminum prices have gone up dramatically since 2006, however oil prices have gone up even more. The result has been a big increase in plastics prices. The result of all this is that 1/4"-thick 5052 Aluminum is still a good deal and it is often the best material for the job.
Disadvantages 1) Price: The material cost for aluminum plate goes up dramatically once you get to 3/8" thick and above.
